Project Update: February 16, 2010 Construction is complete on the Griffith Woods Transmission Line Pole Replacement project. AltaLink is now working with The City of Calgary to reclaim the right-of-way (construction area) in the park. The reclamation work will take place throughout the spring and summer of 2010 with some followup activities in 2011. About the project: AltaLink is currently replacing a portion of two transmission power lines that run through Griffith Woods Park. The current double pole, single circuit 138 kV transmission lines, named 3L and 150L, will be replaced with double circuit structures. History of the project: A Facilities Application was submitted to the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) on December 22, 2008 and in June of 2009 the AUC held a public hearing to listen to stakeholder concerns regarding AltaLink's application. On August 18, 2009 the AUC approved the preferred option to replace the structures on a portion of two parallel power lines, changing them from single circuit to double circuit structures. Why does this work need to occur? The Griffith Woods Transmission Line Pole Replacement project will address the reliability and safety concerns with the current lines and reduce the foot print of the line within the existing right-of-way in Griffith Woods Park. The narrower footprint of the transmission line reduces the number of danger trees that could contact the lines and would therefore need to be trimmed or removed. Project timeline November 2009 - Surveying work November/December 2009 - Brushing (vegetation management) to create safe work spaces in preparation of construction January 2010 - Start of construction March 2010 - Construction completion, right-of-way reclamation with The City of Calgary Parks Pathway Closures During construction, access to the park or pathways may be restricted to ensure the safety of all park users. Pathway closures will be clearly marked with signs and security personnel will be present to monitor the site. Our commitment to the community and the environment We are committed to working with the Discovery Ridge community and all interested stakeholders to ensure that the project is completed successfully with minor impact to residents and park users. We will respect the park while construction occurs and will ensure that immediately following project completion the construction area is restored as directed by The City of Calgary Parks.
