Responsibility
Canadian Electricity Association

AltaLink is an active member of the Canadian Electricity Association (CEA) and many AltaLink employees participate in both CEA leadership roles and technical task groups. Membership allows AltaLink stay abreast of emerging environmental issues and pending regulations, and it also facilitates the development of industry best practices.

The CEA is the national voice for the electric utility industry and provides input to federal regulatory agencies. Examples of issues the CEA has worked with federal agencies on includes SF6 reporting, PCB, treated wood User Guidance Document, and migratory birds.

Sulfur Hexafluoride

Sulfur Hexaflouride (SF6) is an insulating gas commonly used in electrical equipment. SF6 gas releases are an environmental concern because one unit of SF6 is equivalent to 23,900 units of CO2.

AltaLink manages SF6 gas by storing and reusing the gas during maintenance activities. AltaLink  participates in an extensive reporting system and tracks its SF6 releases through an inventory tracking system and reports annually to the CEA. The CEA then reports provincial totals to Environment Canada.

Environmental Commitment and Responsibility Program

A requirement of CEA membership is all members must participate in the Environmental Commitment and Responsibility (ECR) program. The ECR program requires every member implement an ISO 14001 base Environmental Management System. Copies of the ECR annual report can be viewed on the CEA website.
