In North America, 200,000 tons of sealed cell batteries go to unprotected municipal landfills every year. That’s enough corrosive, heavy metal bearing waste to fill 10 Great Lake Freighters!

In 2004, AltaLink established its internal battery recycling program for all employees and contractors. The objective of this initiative is to create awareness on the importance of recycling and to divert corrosive heavy metal bearing waste from landfills. Since 2004 AltaLink has recycled an average of 200 pounds a year through a Canadian based battery recycling company called Raw Materials Company.
