GREENJACKET™
CANTEGA’s GREENJACKET™ product is a long-term solution to wildlife caused outages in substations. It was developed in 2001 by a senior power lineman from Alberta with 25 years of industry experience and it works by providing a barrier between wildlife and dangerous energized electrical equipment. Its high dielectric rating means it can sustain an electric field but does not conduct electric current.
Wildlife caused power outages account for nearly 20 per cent of all outages in substations and until GREENJACKET™, there were very few products on the market that could reduce these outages. GREENJACKET™ has many features that make it an ideal cover-up - it has a high dielectric rating, it's resistant to breakdown from ultraviolet radiation, it's custom built to fit a vast array of equipment in all shapes and sizes, and it can be easily installed and removed in any weather condition.
AltaLink first began using GREENJACKET™ in 2003 when it fitted two of its substations that had histories of bird caused outages with the covers. AltaLink tracks and describes all outages in a central database which has allowed it to identify the highest risk substations. To date, over a dozen substations have been retrofitted with GREENJACKET™ and many more are planned in the near future. In addition to these existing substations, all new substations will have GREENJACKET™ installed prior to them ever being energized as a proactive measure to reducing outages and protecting wildlife.
Innovation: The GREENJACKET™ technology was invented in Alberta and AltaLink was the first company to use it. |
