High River and Okotoks Transmission Project

The routes in this map represent potential route options. If the project is approved, only one line will be built.

Project overview

AltaLink submitted a Facilities Application for this project to the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) for review in July 2012. The High River and Okotoks Transmission Project and Okotoks to Janet Project were included in the same joint application titled Foothills 138 kV Project. To view the application please visit www.auc.ab.ca. Thank you for participating in our consultation process – your input is important to us.

The High River and Okotoks Transmission Project is part of an area transmission development called the Foothills Area Transmission Development (FATD). This development includes new transmission lines and upgrades to the electric system in Calgary and the communities south and east of the city. The majority of the transmission system in the area was built in 1985, since that time the population and industry has grown substantially. These projects will ensure power from new generation plants, including wind power from southern Alberta, is connected to Alberta's electric grid and maintain a reliable supply of electricity to support the growth and demand in this area.

Project details

The proposed project includes:

  • building approximately 15 kilometres (nine miles) of new double circuit 138 kV (138,000 volts) transmission line, from the proposed Foothills Substation (located east of High River) to the existing High River Substation (located north of High River)
  • building approximately 800 metres (half a mile) of new double circuit 138 kV transmission line to connect the existing 911L transmission line to the existing Okotoks Substation
  • building a segment of new single circuit transmission line to connect the 727L tranmission line to the existing 911L tranmission line
  • rebuilding approximately seven kilometres (four miles) of the existing 727L transmission line from single to double circuit
  • decreasing the voltage on a segment of the existing 911L transmission line
  • adding new 138 kV equipment to the proposed Foothills Substation, and to the existing High River and Okotoks substation
