• Southern Alberta Transmission Reinforcement

South Foothills Transmission Project

The routes in this map represent potential route options. If the project is approved, only one line will be built.

Project overview

AltaLink submitted a Facilities Application for this project to the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) for review in September 2012. The South Foothills Transmission Project is part of an area transmission development called the Southern Alberta Transmission Reinforcement (SATR). This reinforcement includes new transmission lines and upgrades to the electric system in southern Alberta. These projects will connect new wind-generated power to Alberta's electric system and strengthen the transmission system in the area.

Project details

The proposed project includes:

  • a new double circuit 240 kV steel lattice transmission line approximately 118-125 kilometres in length (depending on the final route) from south of Fort Macleod to east of High River
  • a new substation in the area southwest of Fort Macleod, to be called Windy Flats
  • a new series capacitor station (similar in appearance to a substation) to be located approximately in the middle of the transmission line

AltaLink has also identified:

  • a new substation location at the north end of the new transmission line, in the area east of High River, to be called Foothills

This substation will be included in a separate transmission project.

*If this project is approved by the Alberta Utilities Commission, the existing 911L transmission line will be removed once the proposed new line is in service. The removal of the existing 911L line will be included in a separate project.
