East Palliser Transmission Project

AltaLink is proposing to build new transmission facilities to connect NaturEner's proposed Wild Rose 1 and 2 Wind Power Projects. The East Palliser Transmission Project includes:

  • a new switching station
  • two new transmission lines

The Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) approved the project in May 2012. Thank you for participating in our consultation process - your input is important to us.

In September 2012, AltaLink received a Notice of Stop Work Direction from the Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) on the 1009L portion of the project. The AESO determined that the approved 1009L transmission line was no longer necessary for the connection of the Wild Rose 1 and Wild Rose 2 wind projects to the Alberta electric system.

NaturEner Canada Inc. (NaturEner) began consultation for the East Palliser Transmission Project in 2008. In spring 2010, AltaLink assumed management of this project. AltaLink’s consultation program included two project open houses and more than 130 personal consultations with stakeholders. Through public consultation, AltaLink received valuable stakeholder input that helped us identify routing for the project.

AltaLink is proposing to:

  • Build approximately 35 kilometres of transmission line between NaturEner’s proposed Wild Rose 1 Substation and a proposed Elkwater Switching Station. The Elkwater Switching Station will also connect to NaturEner’s proposed Wild Rose 1 Wind Power Project.
  • Build a new switching station, to be called the Elkwater Switching Station, adjacent to the Eagle Butte Substation.
  • Build an in/out circuit connection from the existing 983L transmission line to the Elkwater Switching Station (the circuit from the Bowmanton Substation to Elkwater Switching Station will be renamed 1074L and the circuit from Elkwater Switching Station to the Whitla Substation will remain as 983L).
  • Reconfigure and expand the Elkwater Switching Station and Eagle Butte Substation fence boundaries.
  • Add equipment to the Bowmanton Substation.
