The Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) has directed AltaLink to install new equipment at AltaLink’s existing Fincastle Substation as part of a pilot to assess potential benefits on Alberta’s electric system. This new equipment could allow utilities to adjust the flow of power along the transmission line to ensure adequate supply of electricity and improve reliability.
AltaLink’s Fincastle Substation is located in SW-15-10-15-W4, approximately 10.5 kilometres east of the Town of Taber. The pilot project includes:
- Temporarily installing new equipment called The Mobile SmartValveTM Unit.
- Replacing an existing structure outside of the substation with a new structure to connect the new equipment to an existing transmission line in the area. The existing structure is a single circuit wooden monopole structure and approximately 15 metres tall. The new structure will be an H-frame structure that is approximately 10 to 15 metres tall.
