Osprey Nest Mitigation Work

In March 2023, AltaLink is completing osprey nest mitigation work on its existing 551L transmission line that runs between the Town of Banff and Lake Louise. This work is part of AltaLink’s responsibility to ensure a safe and reliable supply of electricity, while maintaining its commitment to the environment and wildlife in the areas where it operates.

Osprey nests along areas of the transmission line can increase the potential risk of wildfires and power outages. To mitigate this risk and ensure that the osprey have a safe place to nest when they return, AltaLink is installing nest deterrents and artificial nesting platforms along areas of the transmission line, and relocating existing nests to the platforms.

To safely perform this work, an upcoming power outage is required. It is currently scheduled to occur from 12 to 6 a.m. on March 16, weather permitting. The outage will impact the areas west of Banff, up to and including Lake Louise. The Town of Banff will not be impacted.
