Safe, reliable, affordable electricity for Albertans
With more than 13,300 kilometres of transmission line and 311 substations, AltaLink is Alberta’s largest regulated electricity transmission provider. Millions of Albertans count on us for the energy that powers their lives. We take that responsibility seriously.
The transmission system is the backbone of the economy, connecting homes, farms, businesses and industries to diverse generation resources such as wind, solar, and natural gas.
Our province is fortunate to have diverse sources of generation to power the grid, and AltaLink has integrated all of these sources effectively for more than 20 years. We did this while consistently improving our reliability performance and keeping our rates flat for five years in a row.
As the generation mix continues to evolve, Albertans can count on us to deliver the energy they need, when they need it.
With a future driven by technology, a push to achieve net zero emissions, and the increasing electrification of society, the grid will play a larger role in our lives than ever before.
Through it all, we remain focused on ensuring that safe, reliable and affordable electricity is available to all Albertans. It’s what we’ve always done.
Never compromising on safety
World-class safety record
A core focus in what we do is making sure our employees and contractors go home safe at the end of every day.
Our employee injury frequency rate is better than those of our peers, as reported by Electricity Canada. We have received Electricity Canada’s President’s Award of Excellence for employee safety as the best performing transmission company with 300 to 1,500 employees for seven consecutive years.
Protecting Albertans while delivering safe, reliable power
With wildfires becoming more frequent and intense throughout Alberta, protecting Albertans while providing safe, reliable power is a top priority for AltaLink.
AltaLink was the first utility in Alberta to have a wildfire mitigation plan. We partnered with Electricity Canada to develop and publish a best practices guide for utilities on mitigating wildfire risk and promoting industry resilience.
Keeping the lights on for Albertans
We work 24/7/365 to keep the lights on in the province
We’re strengthening our system to protect against extreme weather and increasing cyber threats, and we’re focused on finding innovative solutions to optimize our system and increase capacity.
We’re committed to reducing outages, improving response times, and prioritizing maintenance on high-risk assets so that Albertans continue to have reliable transmission service when they need it.
Electricity Canada has ranked us in the top quartile of Canadian electric utilities for outage duration and outage frequency. In 2022 we achieved our best-ever reliability result for our customers.
